Reading the speech John Ralston Saul gave in Australia a few years ago has given me an insight as to why the great need for blogs and bloggers.

I may be slightly exaggerating but the problem is we're creating a pretend elite. People who are experts in something which is really a secondary or tertiary talent, maybe a fourth level talent, we're pretending it's a first level talent. They are managers. They are technocrats. They don't see themselves as leaders in the real sense of the word "leader" and certainly not as democracies understand leadership. So they see themselves as people who would follow somebody else and since there's nobody around for them to follow they come up with all sorts of funny things like: we're following technology; we're following the invisible hand; we're following the invisible balance. I mean, it's really childish romanticism. It's a sign of incompetence, of lack of imagination, of lack of quality as leaders.
The strength that we have as a nation states, democratic nation states, has nothing to do with nationalism, it relates to our sophistication as democratically minded, responsible, sophisticated citizens, individuals. That's the strength that we have. Interestingly enough we produced an elite which is much less competent than the society as a whole, and in fact what's interesting is that most of the specialist elites are more intelligent as individuals and citizens than they are as specialists but the problem is they are only rewarded for being specialists so they deny that they also exist as citizens and individuals. It's a schizophrenic problem that our elites suffers from.

My slant on this, bloggers are the first level talents, the "leaders" the ones crying out for the social reforms and foreign policy changes, the soon to be defining way of how this global community reacts to events, situations, the all encompassing global democracy. We have already started to define our leaders in this context already, a link here a link there, who's linking who...
Finished reading the speech, that bit just struck a chord and I had to get it down before I lost it.
The blogs are The Global democracy of the future, for lack of a better term. The great fractal of voices, if enough seem to point one direction that will be the direction taken by the global democracy. Critical mass is approaching it may be a ways off but, the mainstream media has caught wind of the phenomenon. The $64,000 Billion dollar question is, is this force strong enough to rule the IMF, WTO, GAAT and all those other wonderful agencies designed to keep multinational corporations with their narrow field of purpose and government, mostly just the U.S. government as it really has no opposition, and give the power back to where it belongs? The power, the power being a single voice being able to rouse enough commotion to commit change where change is needed. This is a danger one voice having that much power but look at the state of things now... is it any different, whose goals are we following, certainly not mine (a war on terrorism... give me a break). The cool thing about a global democracy is there are so many different voices out here it would be very difficult if not impossible for a extremist idea to be adopted, the idea would have to be sound. For example how many blogs link to the neo nazis, not any I read.

I love it when a thought/idea is forceful enough to make me think. Force me to write upon said idea and be articulate enough in its expression to be understood by at least me.

In conclusion John needs a blog :) I'd read it...

Sunday, Recovery day... start looking for drivers as the upgrade advisor states modem and scanner need new drivers. Modem not a problem dl a new driver. Scanner well, <rant> You would think that a $500 dollar scanner even if it is 4 years old would have drivers for any Operating System. Apparently Mustek doesn't believe in supporting any of their older equipment. Last listed drivers are for NT, not even Win 2000. I'm more than a little ticked off. Can't even send a nasty letter to tech support, as the only message I receive is "Our e-mail server was unable to send your e-mail." What do you do... simplest thing I'm no longer reccommending any Mustek products to anyone. </rant>
